through the forest

by Jason Alan

they walk barefoot

through the forest

displacing objects

that strive to be

more

a pebble wishing

to be a stone

a twig dreaming

of being a tree

they walk

not blind

wishing themselves

to be greater

or something else entirely

a cloud, perhaps

roaming the landscape

of the sky

crafting shelter

from the summer sun

if only for a moment

if only to escape

if only

but it cannot be

they walk barefoot

through the forest

feeling the earth

the leaves crackling

the dirt conforming

to the shape of toes

and heels

those prints

that wash away

when that cloud gasps

and bursts

bringing rain again

and again

adding another curve

to this imperfect circle

as they walk barefoot

through the forest
